Brecon Beacons in Welsh is "Bannau Brycheiniog"
In April 2023, the National Park's official name became Bannau Brycheiniog and the English name was removed. Bannau is the plural of “ban”, which means "peak" in Welsh, while Brycheiniog refers to the kingdom of the fifth-century king Brychan. Therefore, the name Bannau Brycheiniog translates into English as the Peaks of Brychan's Kingdom.

Perhaps literally, it means to cuddle or to hug and, in that regard, there is a saying, "anyone can cuddle but only the Welsh can cwtch". It does have another meaning is a cubbyhole or cupboard; a small space in which to store things safely, such as an under stairs cupboard. Often heard, "give me a cwtch", or "they are cwtching", it should make anybody feel safe, warm and comforted.
