Welsh Yarn - Farm to Yarn in Wales

We specialise in making hand dyed yarn, dyed in small batches from Welsh yarn. Each batch is hand dyed in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK using only natural dyes. Our Welsh Hand Dyed Yarn Collection contains sheep (and alpaca) wool from farms in Wales and is then spun into yarn a Welsh mill - farm to yarn, in Wales! This yarn is 100% natural fibre.

Our Welsh Hand Dyed Yarn is always dependent on the fleeces we have available from time to time.We have hand dyed a number of Welsh sheep breeds in the past including, Welsh Black, Kerry Hill, Llanwenog, Lleyn and Welsh Mountain. The Welsh Mule sheep breed yarn is always a popular choice for knitting, a cross between Blue faced Leicester ram crossed with a Welsh Mountain breeds ewe.

    Welsh Wool to Welsh Yarn

The process of "sheep to skein", converting Welsh wool from the back of a sheep into Welsh yarn involves several stages, including shearing, washing, carding or combing, and finally spinning the wool into yarn.

During the spinning process, the fibres are twisted together to form a continuous thread of yarn. The thickness and twist of the yarn can be adjusted to create different yarn weights and textures, from fine laceweight yarn to bulky yarn suitable for warm sweaters.

There is only one mill remaining in Wales that can complete the whole process from a fleece to finished, spun yarn. If the fleece of a sheep is farmed in Wales and is spun into yarn at this mill, then it is a "farm to yarn " Welsh product.

    Undyed Welsh Yarn

Our Welsh undyed yarns are 100% Welsh wool and are finished and ready for your knitting projects or hand dyeing. Not everyone wants their yarn to be dyed for them. You may want the natural colours of the fleece in your knitting project, or you may wish to hand dye yarn yourself. We often have Welsh undyed yarns in different breeds, weights and sizes, including undyed Jacob, Alpaca, Polled Dorset and others. Some in 100g skeins, others in 200g skeins. Farm to finished yarn, sourced and spun in Wales.
